Chiara Quartet - November 21, 2015
Chiara Quartet - November 21, 2015
The Chiara Quartet, in its 14th season, is going forward by looking backward, i.e. they are reviving a centuries-old tradition for ensemble playing that has long been common among soloists, the practice of playing from memory. Already well-known for their motto, “Chamber Music in any Chamber,” which means they are willing to play in any setting, they are adding a new facet to their already outstanding reputation, that of “playing by heart.” The quartet made this decision when they realized that having the sheet music in front of them had become distracting. It is a decision that may influence future generations of chamber players as well as established players. Their ability to delve deeply into the heart of their music and engage the audience in the experience is further enhanced by this new, yet old, concept. As they present music by Ravel, Bartok and Brahms, we will surely hear music “with heart, from the heart, and by heart.”

The Chiara Quartet is pleased to announce that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has selected the group to be its quartet-in-residence for the 2015-2016 season.

“The Chiara String Quartet has established itself as among America’s most respected ensembles, lauded for its highly virtuosic, edge-of-the-seat playing" The Boston Globe

Shanghai Quartet with Wu Man - February 27, 2016
Share this Night in Ancient and New China with us when the pipa virtuoso Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet explore the great music of China in a program that features a new multimedia work by the eminent Chinese composer, Zhao Jiping in collaboration with his son, Zhao Lin. Not to neglect traditional chamber music, the formidable Shanghai Quartet will open with Beethoven’s Quartet, Op. 95. Having recorded the complete cycle of Beethoven Quartets, the Shanghai Quartet is no stranger to the Sturm und Drang of Beethoven’s music. And yet, its elegant style can meld the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire. Wu Man’s solo performance of Flute and Drum Music at Sunset by Xi Yang Xiao Gu, and her own arrangement of a traditional Kazakhstan folk song will present the amazing range of sounds from the pipa, giving credence to her being named Instrumentalist of the Year 2013 by the prestigious Musical America.
